Hundreds of people are expressing their discontent with America’s economic and political elites by participating in a growing tent city protest at City Hall. The Occupy Philly movement, which followed Occupy Wall Street and dozens of similar occupations around the country, is growing quickly. The group’s Facebook page has over 13,000 followers.
About 80 tents are currently set up on the west side of city hall, creating a vibrant community of protestors with no intentions to leave any time soon.
Yesterday thousands of people marched with Occupy Philly from City Hall to the Liberty Bell for a rally. Among the marchers were local labor unions and community groups. Momentum keeps building among local organizations that have been fighting against budget cuts and attacks on organized labor.
Donations of food, clothing and other items have been pouring in steadily. Protestors have set up a food kitchen that feeds any hungry mouths throughout the day. Different working committees have formed, including a media team, legal, education, medics, safety, direct action, food, labor, and others. The local community now has a daily newspaper, streaming video and internet radio.
There have been no arrests reported by Philadelphia Police and Civil Affairs Units related to the event
Everyone is encouraged to join the occupation. Participants are developing strategies and plans to create long-term economic and social change in Philadelphia and beyond. Non-stop honking from cars throughout the days and nights shows extraordinary public support.
