You mentioned hunger in the U.S. and around the world. As you know this is a problem that exists in every city as well as rural areas throughout the United States. The poverty and hunger statistics are astounding.
People are organizing to solve these problems. One group I was impressed with was a local farm that was doing incredible work feeding people. Here’s the summary:
“Ekar Farm has engaged 3,000 community volunteers in growing 12,000 pounds of urban organic vegetables. We donated 90% of these vegetables (a market value of $70,000) to the Jewish Family Service Weinberg Food Pantry, feeding 2,000 people a month during our harvest season.”
Aaron described what they did and what I heard was a model for other cities. People are beginning to take over vacant spaces to grow food for their families and communities. It is amazing it has come to this.
The mutual aid and community organizing that is occurring whereby people solve their own problems without dependence on government is a key step in the Occupy movement — which is not only protest but building what we want.
