Obama to nominate Sen. Baucus ambassador to China

USA TODAY: President Obama plans to nominate Sen. Max Baucus to serve as the next U.S. ambassador to China.

A Democratic official confirmed Obama’s intention to nominate the Montana Democrat, who has served since 2007 as chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over the tax code, health care, and trade. Baucus, 72, had already announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election in 2014. He has served in the Senate since 1978. He and House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., have been leading a campaign to overhaul the U.S. tax code, but it has gained little traction.
