Obama throws support behind controversial Islamic center

From CNN

President Obama threw his support behind a controversial proposal to build an Islamic center and mosque near New York’s ground zero, saying Friday that “Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country.”…

“While the Muslim community has the right to build the mosque, they are abusing that right by needlessly offending so many people who have suffered so much,” Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) said in a statement. “The right and moral thing for President Obama to have done was to urge Muslim leaders to respect the families of those who died and move their mosque away from Ground Zero.” …

But Obama said one “reason that we will win this fight” against terrorism is “our capacity to show not merely tolerance, but respect to those who are different from us — a way of life that stands in stark contrast to the nihilism of those who attacked us on that September morning, and who continue to plot against us today.”

  1. As unfortunate as it may be that the location of the mosque is so close to the 9/11 site, our President is correct.

  2. Why is it unfortunate? That’s the root of the problem, this linking of Islam itself with terrorism. This is like saying we shouldn’t build any Christian churches in communities where doctors who perform abortion have been gunned down, or in Waco, Texas, or in Oklahoma City.

Just because someone claims to be acting in the name of their religion, so what? So was David Koresh. So were the inquisitors. So is Fred Phelps.

  3. All Americans who love the constitution and the freedom it guarantees need to show support for Muslims’ rights to develop their center in New York near the World Trade Center site.

They aren’t opening it at Ground Zero, it is a few blocks away. Is the whole metropolis off limits to them? I think it’s rediculous. Freedom of religious for all people in America, not just for Chrisitians and Jews.
