‘Obama doctrine’ begins to take shape

…In the days since Gadaffi’s death, US officials have been eager to praise the underlying strategy of the Libya operation, which cost American taxpayers just over $1bn – against the $1,100bn-plus cost of the Iraq war. The US contributed advanced weaponry rather than infantry on the ground, while responsibility was devolved to Nato allies, neighbouring countries and most of all, the Libyan opposition.

“This is more of the prescription for how to deal with the world as we go forward,” vice-president Joe Biden said on Thursday, adding that during the successful conflict, the US military “did not lose a single life”.

It is too early to call this approach a doctrine, said Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security adviser to Jimmy Carter, the former US president. “But certainly I would acknowledge that what he is doing it defining a different approach to dealing with trouble spots,” Mr Brzezinski said, describing it as “discriminating engagement”…
