FINANCIAL TIMES: President Barack Obama will roll out an ambitious plan to make two years of community college free for millions of students on Friday, as he wraps up a three-state trip aimed at showcasing new initiatives to boost America’s middle class.
The “America’s College Promise” programme would see the government working with states to waive tuition for “responsible” students who attend college at least half-time, keep up with their course work and maintain a certain grade average.
“Put simply, what I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for anybody who’s willing to work for it,” the president said in a Facebook post on Thursday evening from the presidential aeroplane, Air Force One. “It’s something we can accomplish, and it’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anyone in the world.”… (more)
