Obama blinked first in battle for Summers

FINANCIAL TIMES: …With the time nearing when President Barack Obama would need to announce his choice, the gradual desertion of Democrats left the White House in the untenable position of looking to Republicans to get Mr Summers across the line…

The fight over Mr Summers brought together many threads – a debate among Democrats over financial deregulation, monetary policy and what many in Congress in both parties regard as an insular White House’s chronic difficulties in dealing with Capitol Hill.
