Obama asks Congress to delay Syria strike vote

FINANCIAL TIMES: Barack Obama has asked Congress to delay a vote authorising a strike on Syria, while the US and its allies pursue a diplomatic initiative at the UN to force Damascus to give up its chemicals weapons.

In a nationally televised address from the White House, the US president said the initiative, first proposed publicly by Russia this week, “had the potential to remove chemical weapons without the use of force”…

But Mr Obama’s core position did not change – that Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons in Damascus last month demanded a response from the international community, led by the US… (more)

  1. This is a potentially fruitful avenue, but Russia’s change-of-heart is strange. It seems that Putin has bought Assad some time.
