Not a joke

“The City of Lancaster – in the heart of Amish country – is vibrant with art, architecture and history and is in the midst of a strong revitalization. The vitality of the ‘future’ Lancaster City will depend largely on being recognized as a center for the arts.  To help move the vision of an arts center forward, the City is seeking a leader to fill the position: Public Art Manager.”

  1. This article makes no sense. Whatever your point is, it is not so patently obvious that you can convey it merely with the title “Not a joke.” This communicates nothing more than a generic, thoughtless, fill-in-the-blank cynicism.

  2. You gotta be joking……well, as the art community was Gray’s biggest supporter during his bid for Mayor, should I be surprised?? And what, may I ask, will the city spend to retain this Public Art Director and what are his/her duties?

And I would add that Lancaster City is NOT in the heart of Amish Country.

Please tell me where the revitalization is taking place as I have seen nothing remarkeable. We still have many vacant store fronts and many businesses left as they could not make a living downtown. I would not be surprised if the Lancaster Museum of Art were completely passed by and a plan to build a non-profit Arts Center is on the books.

We have pressing issues regarding the future of the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Lancaster Free Public Library who could put to good use the money Lancaster is throwing away for the Public Art Manager.

I consider this a special interest project and object vehemently.

  3. This position is being paid for with grant money for at least two years, money which cannot be used for anything
    else.

  4. The City must have asked for the money. If this is truly a grant for the arts, why not use the money to promote the arts in the Lancaster City schools!

  5. This article, and the mostly sophomoric comments that follow, are big on opinion and small on information. Here are three reasons why this is a breeding ground for straw men and the uninformed talking heads who scream at them:

    1) The position is NOT being funded by Lancaster City taxpayers. The public arts manager is paid for by a 3-year grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation. (It’s nice to see at least one informed individual in the September 4, 2010 at 10:29 pm comment.)
    2) This is NOT news. The position has existed since summer 2009. I guess Leslie Fordham, who first occupied the role, is no longer there. It’s an old, stale excuse for a “scoop.”
    3) This money could NOT have gone to the library, the museum, or the school district. Again, this is a single-purpose grant. I think the most common source of unnecessary “public outcries” is a simple failure to understand the basics of grant funding.

Suffice it to say that “Not a joke” and the comments that follow are a sorry excuse for genuine political dissent.

NewsLanc’s so-called mission statement is to “protect the public from the foolish, the provincial, the greedy, and the predatory.” Well, this “article” is downright foolish, encourages provincialism, and preys upon the hotheaded and uninformed. I can’t see how it’s greedy, though—I’ll give you that.
