Editorial after editorial in the New Era over the past few weeks have risen from the level of petty squabbling and knee jerk devotion to ultra conservative ideologue to thoughtful, well researched and erudite commentary of rationality and integrity.
Two recent examples are “GOP girding for fight over Yucca” and today’s “It’s time to cut Pa. Legislature” which opines :
“Under the proposal by State Sen. Elder Vogel Jr., a western Pennsylvania Republican, the Legislature would shrink by 40 percent – 20 fewer seats in the current 50-membe state Senate; 82 fewer seats in the House, which now has 203 members….
“But, frankly, the savings would be the proverbial ‘drop in the bucket’ for a state like Pennsylvania, which is collapsing under the weight of huge budget deficits. Even so, a switch to a smaller Legislature would represent a sea change for the better in Pennsylvania politics.
“Vogel’s legislation would require changing the state’s Constitution through approval in two consecutive legislative sessions and then approval by voters. Previous legislative attempts failed to gain traction…”
Three wags of the tale!. We hope our praise doesn’t cost the writer(s) his or her job.
