New breed of College presidents

I’ve read some more biographical material about John Burness and find that his influence in Durhan’s civic affairs are uncannily similar to that of John Fry’s in Lancaster. It appears that this new breed of College presidents, as exemplified by Fry and Burness, are not satisfied with the limiting their control to campus affairs; they want to influence politics in the city and  county in which their schools are located. The problem is that, since they are not elected by the citizens of the community, they are not responsible in any way to the electorate and the electorate has no protection from their manipulation and/or abuse of the civic system.
