Of course the user prefers methodone. It is addictive on its own as methodone feels most like a heroin high….and will be the drug accepted by that persons peers.
Methodone has a following all its own as proven when it is sold for drugs or money to buy drugs. And also to get a person through a “dry spell” when there is no dope. There is the methodone you drink from a small cup at the clinic and, over time, you may qualify for “travel meth”, a week-end of methodone doses.
Methodone gets into the bones and causes aching, loss of appetite, and lethargy. After spending 19 months in a 6 month rehabilitation center, I shot dope the day I got out. You must WANT to stop using. It doesn’t come when you read reports and medical findings.
I have been clean for over 25 years and I have done it on my own. For me, it was a surprise pregnancy. I got high throughout the pregnancy on Delaudid, a heart medication, and rationalized by believing if I were a heart patient I would have to take the medicine.
I played around for a few more years, mostly week-ends when my daughter was with her father. One time I got the itch and drove downtown with my daughter who was 8 years old, in the backseat to an area known for drug buys. I pulled over, rolled down the window, and turned to look at my daughter. She had a look that said “what are you doing here! Why??”. I drove home, and I knew that part of my life was over.
It was a strange trip to be living among straight people. Out of society for so long, I was shocked how people lied and talked against each other. Fought over sex and money. At least in my circle of fellow junkies it was not perfect but we treated each other as equal and there was a warm and human connection.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Addicts in treatment suffer relapses, just as people “fall of the wagon” when it comes to cessation of smoking and maintaining desired weight. For some methadone works best; for others its buprenorphine. A few can go “cold turkey”, just as some can give up smoking without nicotine aids or hypnosis. Whatever works!
