Dear Members of Occupy Philadelphia:
We, the undersigned faculty members of Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore Colleges, write to express our support for Occupy Philadelphia. We urge the City of Philadelphia to continue its good-faith engagement with the Occupy movement, to honor and extend the permit it has granted for peaceful protest at City Hall, and to ensure that the arrested members of the movement are given just due process
As educators, we commend the Occupy movement’s advocacy of Philadelphia’s youth populations and public schools, including its protests against unjust youth curfew laws . We express solidarity with college students facing a dwindling job market, and we decry the elimination of subsidies on student loans.
As employees of institutions of higher learning who pay federal, state, and municipal taxes, we align ourselves with the 99% who struggle for the repeal of corporate welfare, demand an end to financial industry bailouts, and call for decent wages, necessary social services, and healthcare for all.
As faculty at institutions with Quaker roots, we applaud the Occupy movement’s commitment to non-violent protest for social change and its vital enactment of a consensus-based democratic process . In the spirit of anti-war activism, we join the call for an end to the US military deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan and US military imperialism around the globe.
As teachers at small liberal arts colleges, we celebrate the Occupy movement’s educational outreach, free libraries, and enactment of free speech and freedom of information . As classroom facilitators, scholars, writers and creative workers who are committed to progressive action, we thank Occupy Philadelphia for helping to invigorate our classrooms and awaken our students.
Sincerely yours,
