LETTER:  “Interrogate privilege and power in myself”

Re:  “If You’re Black, jump back”

Thank you for your powerful article.

We experience the same racism in Australia. I am a white Australian educator eagerly seeking to be and become critically aware.

My Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander friends and colleagues do not always have the luxuries of being eager around their sense if racialised identity especially when Australians shaped by dominant cultural values continue to try to define them by white standards.

I am encouraged by your blog to continue in my commitment to interrogate privilege and power in myself and in every context in which I interact.

EDITOR:    Especially for those of us who grew up in earlier times, racism is part of our psyche.  It is by “interrogating” ourselves that we offset our initial reactions.

We have long considered our self  to be a “racist in recovery.”   And the article by Amanda Kemp awoke us to our prejudice concerning shades of colors .

We are never to old to learn and improve.
