LETTER: Don’t blame PAM for reluctance to give elsewhere

SUNDAY NEWS: Dr. D. Holmes Morton is chairman of the board of the Pennsylvania Academy of Music. Caroline Morton is the board’s vice chairwoman.

The article “A Chill in the (Nonprofit) Air” last Sunday did little to inform readers about the point of law being debated in Lancaster.

To blame PAM for the public’s reluctance to make $100 or $1,000 pledges to the YWCA and other local nonprofits is nonsense.

To argue that citizens of Lancaster are suddenly fearful of making $1 million philanthropic donations because they can be sued if they fail to honor their promise seems unlikely, too. People who make $1 million donations have always had accountants and lawyers as advisers who do understand that a pledge is a contract….
