Leading indicators: Lancaster model offers way to improve region

From the PATRIOT-NEWS EDITORIAL:

…Lancaster is developing a set of “prosperity indicators.” They range from traditional statistics such as unemployment, number of minority-owned businesses and patents to cultural, environmental and health statistics such as arts event attendance, teen pregnancies, obesity, air quality, farmland preservation and number of quality preschools in the county.

The entire point of the indicators is to give businesses, developers, non-profits and local government leaders a much clearer understanding of what is working and what is not in the county.

It grew out of a 2008 decision by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry to focus on “building Lancaster County into a model of prosperity for 21st century America.”
