LANCASTER SUNDAY NEWS

Generational warfare” is the topic of Associate Editor Gil Smart in his weekly column:

Romney and Ryan invoke this constantly; current recipients, as well as those near retirement, need not worry. Grandma and Grandpa can continue to receive all that they are ‘entitled’ to…

“ … we’re at a curious and precarious point in our collective history, where everyone agrees there’s a problem — but only some Americans must sacrifice to address it.

“And it allows the Republican Party in particular to pander to older voters who worry about ‘socialism’ but are determined to retain socialism for themselves. They get to cast a decisive vote for ‘fiscal responsibility’ and against the welfare state, all while continuing to collect the benefits around which many have based their financial existence.”

WATCHDOG: It is outrageous that Gil Smart at 45, struggling to raise and educate his family, should suggest the editor who is 75  forego  even a single cent of entitlement benefits, largely being paid for by Smart’s  generation and others still working. (Social Security from its inception has largely been ‘pay as you’.)

Next Smart will be advocating the top 0.01% earners of the population, who only average $8 million annual income, should pay a bit more taxes!  Talk about “Socialism”!

  1. On September 30th you said, “As we have observed before, Smart gets more knowledgeable and insightful as time goes by and today’s column of jarring observations is certainly among his best. In reponse, here are two things that we can ”imagine”:

Today you knock him. It’s back and forth every other week. One week he’s “world class” (LOL!) and the next he doesn’t have a clue! And apparently you feel this is the only local “news” you have to offer on this site to get readers – a critique of Smart’s column every week.

Wow! Bizarre and sick come to mind!

EDITOR: I wonder if anyone else missed the fact that we were speaking ironically? Of course we loved his artice.
