LANCASTER INTELLIGENCER JOURNAL

Editorial / Obituary “Shirley Temple Black: A true leading lady” remarks:

“In politics and diplomacy, she disarmed skeptics in fields that then were mostly boys’ clubs. President Gerald Ford made her ambassador to Ghana, and she showed up in traditional Ghanaian dress and got to know the women of the country, calling them ‘sisters.’ ”

“Throughout life, she kept her even keel. ‘I class myself with Rin Tin Tin,’ she once said. ‘At the end of the Depression, people were perhaps looking for something to cheer themselves up. They fell in love with a dog and a little girl.’ ”

“Few Americans have known so much fame. Even fewer have done better at living decently with it.”

WATCHDOG: Two wags of the tail for the moving tribute.
