Justices shouldn’t be ruling on case that impacts them

READING EAGLE Editorial:  …Under Article I of the Pennsylvania Constitution, state residents have been granted a series of rights. Section 26 declares, “Neither the commonwealth nor any political subdivision thereof shall deny to any person the enjoyment of any civil right nor discriminate against any person in the exercise of any civil right.”

Yet Article V, Section 16 of the same document states, “Justices, judges and justices of the peace shall be retired on the last day of the calendar year in which they attain the age of 70 years

A better way to deal with this issue would be to have a constitutional convention, at which time the people not only could address the retirement issue but also consider the merit appointment of appellate court judges in the commonwealth…  (more)
