Why we know we’re right: The Nittany Lions might have uncertainty at quarterback, but they have talent in both Rob Bolden and Matt McGloin. Bolden is the more highly regarded player who says he’s grown from a rough freshman season. Like Bolden, McGloin was interception-prone, but he proved capable of moving the offense. Also back this season are five players who were Big Ten all-conference honorable mention picks (OT Quinn Barham, WR Derek Moye, DT Devon Still, CB D’Anton Lynn and SS Drew Astorino).
Why we might be wrong: With games against Nebraska, Ohio State and Wisconsin to end the season, PSU has one of the nation’s toughest closing stretches. The latter two are on the road, and Wisconsin looks that much tougher with the addition of Russell Wilson. And that’s not even including a Week 2 game against Alabama. It is imperative that the Nittany Lions fatten up early to build the confidence it will take to beat the Big Ten’s best later.
Our confidence level in this pick: Strong. This is a veteran team whose defense struggled last season but still was 33rd in the country in total defense. Three returning offensive linemen, including both tackles, will help give the QB time and pave the way for Silas Redd and Stephfon Green in the running game… (more)
