Iraqi forces tighten siege of Tikrit

ALJAZEERA AMERICA: Since the operation to retake Tikrit from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group was launched at the start of the month, thousands of troops and Shia militia have re-conquered the land around the city.

On Wednesday, they moved deep into Tikrit’s sprawling northern district of Qadisiyah and closed in on the few hundred ISIL fighters holed up in the city centre.

But Police Staff Major General Bahaa al-Azzawi said on Thursday that government forces would refrain from advancing too fast to avoid unnecessary losses… (more)

  1. “Reconqured”, they re occupying unoccupied land around the city. They haven’t taken it yet.

    Saudi Arabia is already warning that this signals Iran taking over parts of Iraq, presumably the Shia dominated areas. And guess what? They are.

    One has to wonder how much longer the U.S. will be able to hold their “green zone.”

    I seriously doubt that Iran is going to shed their blood and wealth just to maintain its safety. More likely they will let the IS chip away at it and then just occupy when it is all said and done.

    A bankrupt U.S. trying to maintain the world’s largest embassy in a hostile country using private armies and mercenaries. We keep digging deeper.
