Self-described small business guru Dale Dauten in his column fantasizes the following approaches for dealing with the sharp recession:
“I told every department manager to cut their costs by at least 15 percent or be replaced.”
“Leadership in tough times? …I had HR put all the resumes we were getting in a giant fishbowl in the lobby to remind our employees how many people were waiting to their jobs….Never underestimate the motivational power of fear.”
WATCHDOG: Terrorizing workers is both short sighted and despicable.
To save their jobs, managers will cut expenses 15%. But will the cuts be productive or generate further losses? In what condition will the company find itself when it needs to ramp up during the recovery?
It is one thing to keep workers informed and concerned, but relying on fear rather than multiple means of motivation will not build teamwork or loyalty. So when recovery begins, expect the better people to be looking for jobs elsewhere.
