In his column “Government by the numbers, for better or worse” Jeff Hawkes notes: “Two months after taking office, Corbett in March projected that the state would finish its fiscal year on June 30 about $78 million to the good. But the economy improved faster than expected, causing the surplus to surge far beyond that projection — to nearly $540 million through May. Some think it could reach $600 million by the end of June. That’s hundreds of millions of dollars the state could use to restore some of the huge cuts Corbett proposed. It’s money that could save the jobs of teachers, moderate the rise in college tuition or restore health insurance to the working poor.”
Hawkes concludes: “What we’re learning about Corbett, a career prosecutor before ascending to the governor’s mansion, is that he won’t champion sound public policy if it means changing his mind. Sadly for Pennsylvania, Corbett blithely confuses consistency with acting responsibly.”
