Editorial “No-casino zone at Gettysburg” relates: “A bill that would impose a 10-mile buffer zone around the Gettysburg National Military Park is under consideration in the state House…Thebill would discourage casino developers from attempting to exploit the Gettysburg name.” …
“[Rep. Paul] Clymer, a Bucks County Republican, said House Bill 2081 is need to protect the ‘sacred memory’ of the soldiers who died in the battle of Gettysburg.” …
“Opponents of the bill have rolled out another argument, that casinos already are located near historic sites.”
WATCHDOG: Two wags of the tail! The issue is when does crass and exploitive commercialization detract from the reverential mood of a visit to a national shrine. Certainly SugarHouse Casinio’s location two miles from Independence Hall has no such impact whatsoever.
An aspiration of the Watchdog was to develop a museum honoring Eleanor Roosevelt at Gettysburg. She probably would have opted for the hundreds of mini-libraries provided instead across Afghanistan and Guatemala.
How about a bill that requires a casino with a 2 block radius of King and Queen Streets in Lancaster? Problems solved, next!
It will happen sooner or later…why not make it sooner and ‘move on’??? It might be the only ‘sensible’ thing to do. (EDITOR: We presume this is in reference to a casino.)
If PSP had enough political clout to pull off the Convention Center, they certainly should be able to pull this off as well. Let the whole thing become a ‘privately owned’ venture and get it back on the tax-rolls, and off the backs of tax-payers.
