Editorial entitled “The corruption of college sports”observes:

“… the bowl games also are symptomatic of what is wrong with collegiate sports. And nowhere is that more apparent than in football where teams are jumping conferences to cash in on TV contracts and a chance to play in the BCS title game. That has forced the Big East to establish outposts in Texas and Idaho, and the Pacific 10 to include Colorado. It has led to lawsuits and bitterness among institutions that are supposed to educate and instruct young people how to conduct themselves as adults.

“Last month, the Chronicle of Higher Education asked a number of noted authorities to weigh in on the matter. In a series titled ‘What the hell has happened to college sports and what should we do about it,’ several writers suggested that athletes share in the revenues generated by their sports or that they at least be allowed to have legal representation when their scholarships are in jeopardy.…

“College athletics are supposed to be a facet of the educational process, not the prime focus. They most certainly are not the property of television networks that pay huge sums — for which the players receive nothing — to provide programming and advertising opportunities for commercial sponsors….” … (more)

WATCHDOG: Two wags of the tail! We are fortunate in Lancaster to have editorial staffs, both for the Intell and the New Era, that turn out editorials such as this, even if on local issues they often “hear no evil, see no evil and speak no eveil.”

  1. The reason that they “hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil” on local issues is because more often than not, they are complicit in the evil. Penn Square Partners being the greatest example.

    When had LNP truly done an objective investigation/analysis of the City Police Department or the County Jail? Or Lancaster General Hospital? Or why the Lancaster County Public Library system was shortchanged in funding just so the White Elephant could be built?
