The New Years Day editorial “The 2010 agenda” includes “New tenants for Lancaster Square and the former Bulova building… With Bulova’s closing more than a year ago, an opportunity exists to turn the building into a multi-use facility with restaurants and other commercial/office space.”
WATCHDOG: Have the Intell editors noticed that the Brunswick Hotel is also closed? The only thing open in that entire city block is a parking garage.
Had the recommended smaller version of a convention center (suitable to meet county and regional needs) been built at the Brunswick as originally recommended and planned, the hotel would be thriving and Lancaster Square, including the Bulova Building and all of the empty shops and theater, would likely be occupied and bustling, rather than closed and dormant.
Meanwhile, “a multi-use facility” would be under construction at the former Watt & Shand site where it belongs, consisting of upscale condominium apartments, shops, offices and parking.
Furthermore, the first block of South Queen Street would have become a busy pedestrian thoroughfare instead of an empty canyon most of the year that blocks the natural path of gentrification to the south.
How fast the Intell forgets. We can understand their not wanting to remember.
Growl!
