Hospital execs enjoy healthy paydays

“No more health care cuts; enough is enough,” insists a new TV ad funded by New York hospitals. A hospital lobbying group says that if the Legislature approves proposed budget cuts, the state could lose 12,300 health care jobs.

Here’s an idea: Maybe the 21 top-earning local hospital executives—who collectively earned $64.3 million at their nonprofit posts in 2008, according to a Crain’s tally—can pitch in to save those jobs….

“Nonprofit salaries for hospitals are averaging way beyond the norm,” says Ken Berger, CEO of Charity Navigator, which monitors charitable organizations. “It raises the question of how you define a public charity.”
