EDITOR: We have never questioned standing for the national anthem as a sign of respect and solidarity, but since high school days we have always felt somewhat awkward about having to repeat again and again a pledge for which so many of us, if circumstances warranted, are prepared to give our lives. Of course that isn’t the issue here. But it is good to know there is one student in Texas reflecting on the meaing of the ‘pledge’ and willing to question the establishment, even if it means being punished.

He is likely to grow up to be an outstanding citizen, Democrat or Republican.
