According to the Reading Eagle, the Reading Parking Authority will soon start work on a $12 million parking garage to eventually serve a convention center and hotel. It goes on to report “The garage and hotel that will make up the convention center mean the city’s future is bright even though the current economic picture may be dark, [Reading Parking Authority Executive Director Lawrence H.] Lee said.”
The article continues “Lee’s announcement also coincided with McMahon’s saying Friday that the city is seeking financial protection under the state’s distressed cities act.”
Still another convention center, this one 30 miles away, does not bode well for Lancaster’s convention center. Given its massive guarantees of Marriott Hotel debt, it may not be long before Lancaster City will also be researching the state’s distressed cities act.’
