Harrisburg City Council rejects mayor’s recovery plan for a second time

Though it appears Harrisburg will be able to pay its bills and employees through the end of the year, the city appears headed for a state takeover. Tuesday night, the City Council rejected Mayor Linda Thompson’s fiscal recovery plan for a second time, virtually assuring area state lawmakers will make good on their pledge to aggressively pursue takeover legislation when the General Assembly reconvenes at the end of the month.

But to tide the cash-strapped city over for the short term, the council approved a lease extension deal with the Harrisburg Parking Authority that will funnel $7.4 million into the city coffers.

The money is enough to make two debt payments due today and balance the budget for the rest of the year…
