Grim Economic Outlook

At first glance, today’s news about job creation from the Labor Department is worrying. At second glance, it’s not so bad. But dig a little deeper and the payroll/employment report becomes downright scary…
…The average workweek and average earnings for workers on private payrolls both fell in June, evidence that employers weren’t feeling the need for more hands….

The reason the unemployment rate fell is that so many more people were excluded from the official workforce because they weren’t looking for a job. …

Though it’s hard to make month-to-month comparisons of the government’s discouragement numbers because they aren’t seasonally adjusted, the trend is definitely getting worse. And the problem is how self-sustaining such discouragement can be for an economy…
