Got credibility?: Penn State can recover by opening its records

In recent days, Penn State’s new president has been going out of his way to reassure college applicants, recruiters and donors that the university’s core mission has been unharmed by a child sex abuse scandal.

Its reputation is another matter, though, and Penn State could go a long way toward repairing the damage to Pennsylvania’s largest university system if it would start answering some important, pertinent questions.

Instead of adopting an attitude of openness, though, Penn State keeps hiding behind a loophole in the state’s open records law, enacted in 2009. Through the persistent lobbying of former president Graham Spanier and his cohorts at the other state-related universities, and with the consent of the Legislature, all four — Penn State, Pitt, Temple and Lincoln — are exempt from most of the law’s provisions…
