GM to sell Spark as first all-electric car since EV-1

GM, which was accused of killing it when it retired the test fleet of 1990s EV-1s, will sell its first production all-electric car in the U.S. in 2013. It will be battery EV version of the coming Spark mini-car.

The Spark is a tiny city car that is smaller than Chevy’s new subcompact Sonic that replaced the Aveo. A gasoline version is due on sale in the U.S. next year as a 2013 model. The video above shows a Spark EV prototype this week.

The EV version will be sold in “limited quantities” in select U.S. markets, including California, says GM, and will have lithium-ion batteries supplied by U.S.-based A123. The EV also will be sold in some world markets. The gasoline version of the Spark already is being made and sold in some global markets…
