Fred Shuttlesworth dies at 89; hard-charging civil rights figure

By his own count, Shuttlesworth had been bombed twice, beaten into unconsciousness and jailed more than 35 times…

“The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth is the last of a kind,” Rep. John Lewis, the Georgia Democrat and civil rights leader, said in a statement Wednesday. “When others did not have the courage to stand up, speak up and speak out, Fred Shuttlesworth put all he had on the line to end segregation in Birmingham and the state of Alabama.”…  (more)
