State employee layoffs under this year’s budget could be fewer than Gov. Ed Rendell estimated last month, but final counts are still unlikely to emerge until next week.
Last week, Rendell estimated layoffs, which could include public employees, teachers and emergency responders, would be about 12,500 if Congress does not approve the six-month extension of federal stimulus aid to states and schools. Pennsylvania had anticipated receiving $850 million in federal funding, but that figure dropped last week to about $600 million.
The governor said more employees than expected are choosing to retire, and the state’s freeze on hiring new workers has helped that figure drop. No early retirement offers were made…
