Fire when ready: A bill to make Pennsylvania more trigger-happy

From the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE:

…If you believe the supporters of this effort, you might think Pennsylvanians don’t already have the right to protect themselves. They do. All that the law requires is one sensible brake on gun fights: It imposes on a threatened person a duty to retreat under certain circumstances….

The bills eliminate the obligation to retreat and any possible civil claims in court that might arise from a person protecting himself against a would-be assailant with a deadly weapon. But where are the headlines plucked from real-life cases that show the need? Where are the judges and juries who have sided with an intruder over a homeowner protecting himself?

More troubling, the so-called castle has been expanded from the home to include any attached porch, deck or patio and any vehicle, motorized or not. All this is being done in the service of one dangerous idea: Guns are the answer to all problems. In truth, the supporters of this ill-conceived bill have invited only more trouble. They have thrown caution to the wind and sown the wind with lead…
