Experts call bankruptcy approval unlikely for Harrisburg

Nothing prevented Harrisburg City Council from filing a bankruptcy petition, but keeping the case from being thrown out of court might be the real challenge. On the heels of the council’s attorney filing for Chapter 9 protection, state lawmakers, Dauphin County and Mayor Linda Thompson were busy lining up to stop it.

City Council’s attorney, though, maintains that neither state law nor federal bankruptcy requirements should block Harrisburg’s ability to receive debtor protection.

State Sen. Jeffrey Piccola, R-Dauphin County, was among the lawmakers contending that if Harrisburg were accepted into bankruptcy, it would make it harder for other state municipalities to obtain municipal bonds…
