The lead Sunday News front page article on the Lancaster County prison is an example of methodical, extensive, balanced reporting on a matter of importance to all. From the considerable number of sources quoted and references made, it is apparent that the article was generated over a period of time and consumed many more hours in preparation than is usual.
The extensive report (about one full page of text alone) is yet another sign of the resurgence of the Lancaster Newspapers.
We hope the time will come when the print medium will investigate whether public charity Lancaster General Health is spending its vast tax exempt profits in the best interests of the community. Or is LGH too big and powerful, its leaders to much a part of the establishment elite, to be held publicly accountable?
Of course the chair of LGH, Alexander Henderson, had been indirectly involved in the law suit his wife, former county commissioner Molly Henderson, brought against the Lancaster Newspapers. It was recently dismissed. The case may have been an inhibiting factor lest the newspapers be accused of being impartial. With the air cleared, hopefully LGH will receive proper coverage. It deserves an entire series of investigatory reporting which would be gist for a Pulitzer Prize.
