European Union governments have formally adopted an oil embargo against Iran as part of sanctions over its disputed nuclear programme.
The sanctions on Monday follow financial punishments signed into law by the United States on December 31 last year and mainly target the oil sector, which accounts for some 90 per cent of Iranian exports to the European Union.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Monday called the measure part of “an unprecedented set of sanctions”.
“I think this shows the resolve of the European Union on this issue,” he said…
