Drilling slowdown gives Pennsylvania communities chance to assess impact of industry

PITTSBURG REVIEW-TRIBUNE: The ongoing gas drilling slowdown is a critical time for people in boom towns to think about how their communities sustain themselves through down cycles, said Dave Messersmith, a Penn State University extension educator.

To help them, Messersmith and Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences will start its next webinar series on the state’s shale-gas industry on Thursday. The six sessions will cover such topics as development trends, royalty checks, and environmental impacts. They occur once monthly through February.

The oil and gas industry is cyclical and rigs are leaving the state. That means fewer hotel bookings, business deals and traffic, Messersmith said. The slowdown led several communities to think about diversifying instead of relying on the gas boom, he said…   (more)
