Don’t overreach on cell phone ban

York Dispatch: ….The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 11 percent of American drivers at any given time are using cell phones….

Based on studies like these, last year we endorsed the idea of banning drivers from using such hand-held devices….

It has become clear that for some lawmakers, including a few of our local representatives, banning hand-held cell phone use isn’t enough.

They would be in favor of a much broader, distracted-driving bill that would encroach even further on our freedoms. ..

For instance, state Rep. Seth Grove, R-Dover Township, say drinking coffee while driving is “far worse than just talking on the phone.”

“I still believe that probably eating is more dangerous,” adds state Rep. Ron Miller, R-Jacobus….

While lawmakers have support right now for a cell phone ban, they shouldn’t consider it a blank check on our liberties.   (more)
