Don’t misconstrue Mass. election results

Scott Brown voted for universal health care in Massachusetts. He’s also pro-choice. If there wasn’t a big red “R” branded on his forehead, everyone would think he’s was a Democrat.

Those who view his election as a rejection of Obama are fooling themselves. The latest polls show 75% of the voters like Obama. What they object to are the Democratic policies. The fact that the GOP is liked only a third as much as the Democrats shouldn’t comfort the Blue leadership much; if there was an election tomorrow, “None of the above” would get about 75% of the vote.

The first political party that adopts the Obama/Brown philosophy will see overwhelming response from the public. It’s not a game of “keep away”. If someone wants to win, they need to work towards the American people winning, not the opposition party losing. If the Democrats were to replace Harry & Nancy with conciliatory types, they still have a chance to do well this fall. As it is, there aren’t many incumbents of either party who are “safe”.
