Cruel and unusual punishment

(For a decade Marc Emery operated a marijuana seed mail order business from his store in Vancouver, Canada.  Much of his seeds were shipped to the United States.  An outspoken opponent of the War on Drugs, Emery used most of his earnings to support organizations of like minded political activists in Canada and the United States..

He was arrested several years ago at the request of US authorities and eventually agreed to a five year sentence which he had hoped would be served in Canada but which, so far, has been denied.  He recently entered the federal prison system.) –  Editor

After Marc Emery’s wife, Jodie Emery, recorded a prison call with Marc to upload as a podcast (not against prison rules), Marc has been in solitary confinement (aka “the hole”) for over a week with potentially another two months to go. He now spends 24 hours a day with no stimulation: newspapers, books, magazines, human interaction. This is cruel and unusual punishment.

If people did not read his wife’s description of her visit with Marc they should.  It is barbaric how the U.S. is treating him (and so many others!).  How we can call ourselves civilized is hard to see.  Here’s one paragraph with a link to the rest:

He explained that it was very, very bad in SHU, “just like solitary confinement in the movies, truly that horrible”. He’s completely deprived of any human contact or fresh air or space. He has never been allowed out of his cell. Food is delivered through a slot in the door three times a day, take it or leave it (and Marc eats whatever they give; you have nothing else). Guards don’t even open the doors for check-up; they just look through a tiny window in the door. It’s 24-hour lockdown in a tiny little room with nothing but non-stop screaming and yelling from the other SHU inmates. “It’s like a mental institution,” he said. “It’s absolutely maddening.”

Supporters should contact United States Attorney General Eric Holder to protest the “cruel and unusual” punishment of a non-violent offender. This type of punishment violates the 8th amendment of the United States Bill of Rights.

First and foremost, repost this information on your blog, facebook, myspace or twitter. Information is the most powerful weapon we have.

Next: Call the Office of the Attorney General, (202) 514-2001

People can write to Marc and express solidarity with him: http://www.cannabisculture.com/v2/content/2010/05/22/Send-Marc-Mail-SeaTac-FDC
