County GOP endorses Smucker for Congress, divided over his replacement

LANCASTERONLINE:  Lloyd Smucker, a state senator serving out his second term in Harrisburg, easily won the Lancaster County Republican Party’s endorsement to replace U.S. Rep. Joe Pitts in Congress Tuesday night…

In the three-way race to replace Smucker, Republican committee members voted and debated for an hour and a half before deciding to adjourn without endorsing any candidate.

Rice, 35, a lawyer and Iraq War veteran from West Lampeter Township, had the most support but failed to get the required two-thirds through six ballots that divided the party between backing him or former county commissioner Scott Martin, 43, of Conestoga Township…  (more)

EDITOR:   We were told that the powerful establishment forces that resented former commissioner Scott Martin’s recommendations and efforts in resolving  the Convention Center deficit situation had sought to have the committee endorse another candidate.

Martin now is the clear front runner for the state senate position, while Smucker is sent off to D. C. to stand in line for a two or three terms before he can again do much harm.

But who knows what he will do then. He may sponsor a national CRIZ give away!
