Corbett’s budget plan axes ‘last resort’ help for poor

About 70,000 Pennsylvanians stand to lose their only source of income if spending plan slashes the state’s General Assistance welfare program.

 

LEHIGH VALLEY MORNING CALL:  Corbett’s $27.1 billion budget proposal would eliminate a program that provides a $205 cash grant each month to disabled, unemployed Pennsylvanians without children, those fleeing domestic violence, adults caring for the sick or disabled, adults in drug or alcohol treatment programs and children living with an unrelated adult.

The grants are meant as a temporary measure, covering people until they either are officially declared disabled or able to return to or find work….  (more)
