Controversy surrounds downsizing of state government proposals

HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS: House Speaker Sam Smith, R-Jefferson, and Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, R-Jefferson County, are pushing historic government reform proposalsthat would ask voters if they favor eliminating a total of 62 elected positions in the three branches of state government.

Both argue that it is for the sake of efficiency and cost effectiveness that they offer their proposals. Plus, it responds to the complaints frequently made about a bloated government. But critics suggest the proposals appear to them to be a thinly veiled attempt to pander to the public in an election year.

  1. Excellent first start. Now if we could get the legislature to meet for 3 months every two years we would really have much better government.
