Candidates renew debate over health care reform

From opposite corners of the state, and of the policy spectrum, Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate candidates renewed their running debate on health care reform Tuesday as Pat Toomey derided the controversial measure as “a series of false promises,” while Democrat Joe Sestak criticized the Republican for advocating its repeal.

In an appearance in Philadelphia, Mr. Sestak told an audience that as a result of the health care law “my child and 2.5 million others in Pennsylvania can no longer be denied care for pre-existing conditions.”

At a news conference at the North Side office of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Mr. Toomey contended that the bill could increase the costs of health care by as much as 17 percent above the existing rate of health care inflation. And he said that, contrary to the projections of the Obama administration, as many as 9 million Americans would be forced to change their current health care plans as the law is fully implemented…
