However, he emphasized they do not ask local police to enforce federal immigration laws — potentially coming into conflict with a portion of the executive order that asks to “empower” state and local law enforcement “to perform the functions of immigration officers in relation to the investigation, apprehension, or detention of aliens in the United States.”
But “empower” is not the same as “require,” said Gray’s chief of staff Pat Brogan.
Although we have often questioned Gray’s judgment, we admire Rick Gray for standing up for those values for which he fought as the one time local representative of the ACLU On these, who has not compromised.
