Bruised Netanyahu leads Israel election

FINANCIAL TIMES:  … Exit polls published by three Israeli television channels on Tuesday evening showed that the ruling bloc, comprising Mr [Benjamin] Netanyahu’s Likud party and former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beitenu, will have 31 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, 11 fewer than the 42 they had held.

A new centrist party, Yesh Atid, headed by the TV presenter Yair Lapid, was the unexpected success story, gaining a projected 18 to 19 seats and making it the second-largest party in the Knesset.

Labour, the second-largest party in the current parliament and a standard-bearer of the Israeli left for decades, fell to third place in the exit polls, with all three giving it a projected 17 seats…  (more)
