An all-electronic Pennsylvania Turnpike is projected to save $21 million annually

…The commission this year set on a path to retire its fare collection booths in favor of a network of overhead gantries that will make automatic deductions from E-ZPass users’ accounts and photograph license plates of other vehicles so bills can be sent to their owners.

When complete, the move is projected to save the Turnpike $21 million in operating costs annually, but at the price of elimination of the 755-person toll-taker workforce.

[Rep. Michael] McGeehan also said he’s not sure about the technology, citing reports from Florida where license plate readers have misread tags and failed to distinguish between Florida and out-of-state tags, resulting in errant charges…
